THST-SV: Day 4-Ski Halfpipe Final

Day 4 of The Honda Ski Tour-Sun Valley, Idaho. Simon Dumont was the $25,000 winner of the ski halfpipe. Read on for the complete results and blog.

At Day 4 of THST in Sun Valley, Idaho the ski halfpipe finals were the most anticipated event of the day, if not the entire week. It is most certain, that this event did not disappoint anyone who successfully hiked up the steep and slick mountain. If you made it up, you saw some of the most dynamic and athletic skiing ever! Here are the complete ski halfpipe final results and a little about just trying to make it up that mountain.

I believe that at this point in my THST Sun Valley blog I don’t need to share with you that it was cold, but boy was it cold! Sorry, I just couldn’t help myself. I wonder how times I said, or heard someone talk about being cold this weekend? Just as a social experiment, I did try counting at the skiercross finals, but realized this was slightly psychotic when the numbers went into the double digits in only a minute.

Climbing up the mountain to get a front row seat for the ski halfpipe competition at THST was more challenging than I had anticipated, but worth every single step! Put it this way, I saw some friends walking up the hill that I know are much, much more athletic than myself having a difficult time. I also was sadly aware that there were others that were simply not fit enough to make the trek up the steep terrain...too bad. The ski halfpipe finals, in my opinion, was the must see event of the entire weekend and without a doubt should be recognized as an Olympic sport, as soon as possible!

The ski halfpipe athletes are skiers, aerialist and gymnasts all rolled in one. I have never experienced anything like watching these athletes soar way above my head, while throwing awe-inspiring tricks and landing them effortlessly. These athletes need the respect that they so greatly deserve, immediately. I had no idea how unquestionably talented these skiers were until I saw the ski halfpipe with my own eyes and in person!

It was also thrilling to see Mike Riddle and Matt Hayward, athletes that both my husband and I had spent some quality time with over the weekend (look for indepth interviews with many of THST ski halfpipe athletes in the near future), not only make the finals, but generate some of the top performances of the entire night.

Simon Dumont was the $25,000 winner of the ski halfpipe competition at THST in Sun Valley. Congratulations Simon! I honestly was unaware that a human being was capable of performing those tricks, on or off of skis! You are nothing short of amazing!

Here is the complete list for THST-Sun Valley ski halfpipe finals, as well as the current point leaders of THST:

PLACE

1 12 SIMON DUMONT 93.75 85.25 93.75

2 8 MIKE RIDDLE 76.25 89.5 89.5

THST-SV: Day 4-Schedule & Recap

Day 4 of The Honda Ski Tour-Sun Valley, Idaho. Here is THST’s schedule: Sunday, January 14th. Also, a Day 3 recap, including skiercross results and MTV at THST!

Welcome to Day 4 of THST in Sun Valley, Idaho! Day 3 was yet another outstanding day at THST. Yes, it is STILL VERY COLD, but I’m also very happy to report that I only saw one girl yesterday wearing a mini-skirt (she told me that she could not feel her legs). Day 3 recap: the results for the skiercross, music highlights and my interview with Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag from MTV’s The Hills at Swollen Members. Plus, a shout out to the Canadian ski halfpipe team on their big event day!

The Day 3 skiercross races were a greatly appreciated hot adreniline rush for the estimated 5,000 (and yes, freezing) outdoor fans. I spoke with an X Games fanatic from New York City, who told me that he had never seen so many people at any single skiercross event. Good job THST! The skiercross final was hands down the most exciting 50 second sporting event that I have ever seen. Congratulations to Casey Puckett of the USA for his $25,000 win!

Here are the skiercross complete final results, as well as the current point leaders for THST:

1ST PLACE Casey Puckett - USA

2ND PLACE Stanley Hayer - CZE

3RD PLACE Lars Lewen - SWE

4TH PLACE Daron Rahlves - USA

5TH PLACE Tomas Kraus - CZE

6TH PLACE Zach Crist - USA

7TH PLACE Jake Fiala - USA

8TH PLACE Travis Svensrud - USA

The music was raging last night at THST. I was extremely happy to be inside at Basecamp (and warm) to checkout Three Days Grace and Hinder. Both shows had high energy and the crowd absolutely loved it! However, my favorite show at THST was most definitely Day 3’s Swollen Members and Kamphire Collective. This was without a doubt the hot place to be!

In fact, last night at Swollen Members I chatted with MTV’s Lauren "LC" Conrad and Heidi Montag from the MTV hit reality series The Hills. The Hills' second season premiers this Monday, January 15th. Premier or not, Lauren and Heidi were not willing to miss their first trip to Sun Valley, Idaho to experience THST in person. Heidi is from Crested Butte, Colorado and equated Sun Valley with being at home: “It’s beautiful here, Sun Valley reminds me a lot of Crested Butte!” Southern California native Lauren Conrad has also become an instant fan of Sun Valley, as well as THST: “It’s cold! I’ve never been this cold in all my life, but it’s so cool to see these amazing ski events before they go to the Olympics.” Heidi also gave a thumbs up to the halfpipe at Sun Valley: “Awesome pipe, as good or better than any in Colorado.”

My new friends on Canada’s ski halfpipe team have also echoed Heidi’s enthusiastic approval of Sun Valley’s halfpipe. Canada’s Justin Darey, Matt Hayward and Mike Riddle all concluded that Sun Valley has a “classic” feel and an “amazing pipe.” Good luck today Mike, Matt and Justin! Go Canada!

Remember these words of wisdom if you are going to the ski halfpipe finals tonight: dress warmly, get there by no later than 5:30pm (the walk up the mountain will take you about fifteen- minutes) and take the free Warm Springs bus to avoid parking issues!

DAY 3 SCHEDULE:

Warm Springs Lodge - free

  • 4:00-5:30pm Apres Ski - Fun & Fitness Fashion Show
Warm Springs / Bald Mtn – free event/lift ticket needed on the mountain

  • 10:30am-12:15pm Halfpipe Practice
  • 10:30am – 7:30pm Industry Expo Area
  • 12:30-1:15pm Halfpipe Heat 1
  • 1:15-1:45pm Halfpipe Practice
  • 2:00-2:45pm Halfpipe Heat 2
  • 4:00-5:30pm Halfpipe Practice
  • 6:00-7:00pm Halfpipe Finals
  • 7:00pm Halfpipe Awards Ceremony
Love reality television? Read more about The Hills second season at MTV or check out my article on Casting Directors and Reality TV Shows at Suite101. (Yes, I’m also a film and television casting director.)

Have great Day 4 at THST! See you back here later for a THST blog update!

THST-SV: Day 3-Schedule & Recap

Day 3 of The Honda Ski Tour-Sun Valley, Idaho. Here is THST’s schedule for Saturday, January 13th. Also, a Day 2 recap and a freezing weather warning!

It’s Day 3 at The Honda Ski Tour in Sun Valley, Idaho! To recap Day 2: “Wow! It is unbelievably cold outside!” If you are coming up today or tonight, the weather is no joke! DRESS APPROPRIATELY! It will be colder today in Sun Valley, Idaho than in Anchorage, Alaska. Read on for my recap and thoughts for THST Day 2. Also, look for today’s schedule.

It was an incredibly cold Day 2 at THST! On the first major day of THST four resort schedule, the weather became a relevant issue throughout the day and night. The spectators at the skiercross qualifier were definitely cold, but more importantly, I was told the winds created some challenges for the athletes. The race was in fact, a time trial with the skier soloing on his qualifying run. The skiers with the top fourteen racing times moved on and will compete in today’s skiercross. Seven “Paul Mitchell Dark Horse Qualifiers” will have another chance this morning to earn one of the two final spots.

Here are the skiercross qualifying results, for the skiers that are still in race contention:

RESULT BIB LAST NAME FIRST NAME Run 1 Run 2 Best Run

Advance From Run #1

1 121 Fiala Jake 54.17 54.17

2 118 Gavaggio Enak 54.63 54.63

3 119 Svensrud Travis 54.72 54.72

4 20 Hayer Stanley 55.15 55.15

5 66 Puckett Casey 55.49 55.49

6 83 Crist Zach 55.55 55.55

7 75 Rahlves Daron 55.65 55.65

8 11 Rodigos Jean 56.43 56.43

9 117 Barr Davey 56.65 56.65

10 106 Smith Cody 56.72 56.72

11 14 Lewen Lars 56.76 56.76

12 30 Archer Eric 56.80 56.80

13 88 DelBosco Chris 56.88 56.88

14 82 Questad Christian 56.97 56.97

Paul Mitchell Dark Horse Qualifier (7 athletes)

15 28 Glick Justin 57.46 56.86 56.86

16 10 Rixon Carl 57.13 DNS 57.13

17 24 Bloomfield Clic 57.22 59.50 57.22

18 13 Palmer Shaun DNF 57.73 57.73

19 47 Murphy Matt 58.26 57.88 57.88

20 79 Greener Rick 58.87 58.32 58.32

21 78 Post Griffin 58.81 59.23 58.81

It was literally freezing outside last night. The Wailers were dressed in enormous winter parkas with fur hoods. In fact, their coats would have been somewhat comical, if their dress wasn’t so very necessary. The Wailers were smart and dressed for the weather. There were however, many people in attendance who were not dressed appropriately. The shows were great and THST has diligently produced many wonderfully creative event details (everything from street performers to fireworks to impromptu outside fireplaces), unfortunately the weather was the most talked about event during THST’s second day.

I’m looking forward to tonight’s all-indoor produced events at Basecamp! Still, you will have to walk outside to get to all the other shows and appreciate everything THST has to offer. At the risk of sounding like your mother, I’m going to repeat myself and remind you to dress for freezing weather! Forget about fashion (remember The Wailers): the warmer you are, the more fun you will have at THST!

21st Century Ski Revolution: THST

Kipp Nelson’s 21st century skiing revolution, The Honda Ski Tour has arrived. Read the exclusive interview from THST Athlete Reception in ever evolving Sun Valley, ID

Kipp Nelson’s mission as I see it, is to give a much needed shot of adrenaline to the ski industry throughout the world. In my exclusive interview with him tonight he pitched his innovative tour as “ESPN meets Entertainment Tonight, meets the Travel Channel.” Nelson was adamant that The Honda Ski Tour is not only about the “skiercross and the ski halfpipe,” but moreover, the mountain destination, the raging music and the atmosphere. However, it’s my opinion that his brilliant components aforementioned could make one of Kipp Nelson’s THST athletes the next Shaun White.

With the enthusiasm of any great visionary, Kipp Nelson stated that: “I want the guy in New York City to turn on his television, see The Honda Ski Tour in Sun Valley and say ‘I wish I was there.’ This is for the weekend skier who isn’t famous or rich or a local. All anybody has to do is purchase the $99.00 all access pass and he’s in the know.”

Celebrating mountain living, entertainment and fun, hardy partying is what will enable this ski lifestyle to be firmly cemented in our mainstream culture and endure. One need not go to the skiercross or the ski halfpipe to get full THST experience. Kipp insisted: “Irrespective of whether you decide to go to the ski events or not, you will be blown away!”

When I inquired if The Honda Ski Tour is coming back to Sun Valley, Kipp Nelson earnestly responded: “I hope so. In many ways Sun Valley is better than the other towns (Aspen Snowmass, Breckenridge and Squaw Valley). It’s hard to replicate the “town within the town,” that we created in Sun Valley, Idaho. It’s simple. When it’s dark you go to Basecamp, and when it’s light out you go to the mountain.”

Speaking with the array of world-class athletes congregating from all over the globe tonight, I can honestly surmise that they hold Kipp Nelson in high esteem for starting the 21st Century skiing revolution. No doubt, Kipp has imprinted the skiercross and ski halfpipe on the map via The Honda Ski Tour and will undoubtedly succeed in branding the events, mountain life-style and athletes into our mainstream culture.
