January 2007 marks the official public opening of Portland, Oregon’s most highly anticipated member of their transportation system, the Portland Aerial Tram. Connecting the Oregon Health & Science University’s Center for Health & Healing in the South Waterfront District to Pill Hill near Sam Jackson Park Road, the Portland Aerial Tram will serve as a fun, as well as accessible, transportation option for locals and tourists alike. Surely, this trip soaring approximately 500 feet above downtown Portland will quickly become the best place for tourists and professionals to take incredible photographs of Mount Hood.
During December 2006, employees of the Oregon Health & Science University served as brave guinea pigs while all the kinks and adjustments were being made to the Portland Aerial Tram’s mobile and safety systems. These tests were very successful and the Portland Aerial Tram is now ready for the public to enjoy their own ride high above Portland, Oregon.
Cruising at about 500 feet above downtown Portland, the Portland Aerial Tram ride takes about three minutes total. The two futuristic pod-like cars leave every five minutes and can carry up to 79 people. Cyclists are also welcome to drive their bikes on board for the trip. A great excuse if your not in the mood for biking Portland’s extremely challenging hills! There are however, only a handful of fold down seats available for riders. The seats are on a first come first serve basis, otherwise the trip is standing room only.
