Exploring what it is like to live in the winter, as a local, in the ski resort town and community of Ketchum/Sun Valley, Idaho.

Ever feel like packing up, leaving it all behind and making the move to a place where you can ski, snowboard, snowmobile or just play in the snow all winter long? Before you take the big snowy plunge, read about a few basics of what it is like to live as a local in the ski resort town of Sun Valley, United States.

When living as local in a ski resort town, you are here to ski and enjoy all that winter has to offer! The most anticipated sporting event of the year is the first snowfall, followed by the opening day of the mountain. Thanksgiving Day is usually opening day for Sun Valley, Idaho. And yes, the First Snowfall: Sun Valley, Idaho has happened!

Now that snow is accumulating on the mountain, the next task for any local is to make sure they have the funds to buy their lift tickets. Lift tickets can be pricey. However, many locals avoid the ticket crunch by getting jobs with companies that purchase their passes for them. For the skiing local, this perk can be even more valuable than a 401k or health insurance (although health insurance is highly recommended if you are hitting the slopes).

Looking for some new equipment? It might not be brand new, but getting great lightly used skis, snowboards, and other essential winter equipment is easily purchased when you're a local in a ski resort town. Locals check out classified ads, ski swaps (events held throughout the year), and thrift stores for great deals. Locals also are well-informed skiers. The Ski-Snowboard Show Schedule-2006 will help any local find the gear bargains that they are looking for.

Ready for lunch? Grab an energy bar! For a local living in a ski town lunchtime is the perfect opportunity to hit the slopes. There should be not surprise however, if you find that your chairlift partner for the next 20 minutes or so is your boss, the mayor, an A list celebrity, or perhaps even the CEO of a major corporation.

Also, don't be surprised if you arrive at your dentist, dry cleaner, manicurist, or mortgage broker only to find them absent. In their place you will simply find a sign reading: "Gone Skiing." Finally, there should be no shock in spotting your family doctor leaving the hospital in his Nordic skiwear and strapping on his skis to begin his commute home. This is simply life as a local in a ski resort town. You might as well just enjoy the snow and join them!
